Make a Big Difference on Small Business Saturday®

SBA says shopping at small businesses can have a huge impact on local economy.
As a proud supporter of Small Business Saturday®,  a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year, the U.S. Small Business Administration is encouraging every American to support small businesses by doing some of their holiday shopping on the Saturday after Thanksgiving at small businesses.
This year's Small Business Saturday® is Nov. 26, 2011.
"Small businesses are the foundation of our economy – half of America's workers either own or work for a small business," said SBA Administrator Karen Mills.  "Small Business Saturday® is an opportunity to show our support for our friends and neighbors who throughout the year are growing our local economy, as well as supporting many local initiative and organizations."
Nov. 26 marks the second annual Small Business Saturday®, a day to support the local small businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. First there was Black Friday, and then Cyber Monday and now Small Business Saturday® will help drive shoppers to America's job creators. Small businesses have generated two out of every three net new jobs over the past 15 years and employ over half of all private sector employees.

SBA Forms Strategic Alliance with the National Association of Minority Contractors San Diego and Imperial County Chapter

Agreement improves access to technological information, education and local resources needed by entrepreneurs to start and grow small businesses
The U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) district office in San Diego has signed a strategic alliance with the newly formed San Diego and Imperial County Chapter of the National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC).  The two organizations have pledged to work together to improve business access to technological information through educational opportunities and SBA resources while also providing maximum financial opportunities and training to entrepreneurs.  The agreement was signed by SBA District Director Ruben Garcia and NAMC President/CEO Aldrica Lattimore.
                                                                                     
"I am extremely pleased with the goals established by NAMC and their excellent leadership through Ms. Lattimore" said Garcia.  "Aldrica has an excellent track record of assisting minority entrepreneurs to fulfill their small business aspirations and I know that NAMC will take advantage of SBA's programs to help more small business owners."

NAMC's mission is to provide education and training to minority contractors in construction; to promote the economic and legal interests of minority contractor firms; to advocate laws and governmental actions that concern minority contractors; to bring about more equitable and wider procurement and business opportunities; to reduce and remove the barriers to full equality which confront minority contractors; to build bridges between minority contractors and the parties or entities with whom they must work; to create a forum of sharing, developing and maintaining the highest professional standards and mutual support.

"NAMC members look forward to utilizing the resources available through SBA.  We plan to work closely with SBA and Mr. Garcia to ensure that our members are able to maximize financial and training opportunities.  We will give as much feedback and statistics necessary to ensure that NAMC's small business owners have a voice and collectively make a difference," says President/CEO Aldrica Lattimore.

10 Rules for Holiday Season Hiring

As the economy continues to gain traction, many small retailers are forced to put more of their economic eggs in the holiday season shopping basket.  Hoping to take advantage of an uptick in consumer confidence, a three-month end-of-year holiday splash is possible, but may be more difficult this season.  So hiring extra help for the hoped-for push should be thought out more than ever.  Here are some ways to help make short-term hires pay off.
10.  Have a Staffing Plan.  Know what it takes to get specific tasks done, and how long it should take for a competent person to learn what you want them to do.  Resist the temptation to be over-optimistic about what you will need to handle holiday season volumes.
9.  Know How Much a New Hire Really Costs.  Recruiting, hiring, training, employment taxes, wages, etc., all have costs.  Compare these costs against the expected benefits in increased revenues or saved expenses.  Are you making a wise decision versus paying some overtime to existing staff?
8.  Don't Over Think the Process.  You're not hiring someone for more than a few weeks.  Don't make the process so comprehensive that it sucks up all your time and energy.  If you plan to take more than a week, 10 days at the most, you're overdoing it.
7.  Do at Least Minimal Background Checks.  You don't want someone who's likely to steal inventory or money, or sell stuff to friends and family at 80 percent off.  Plus they need to show up when scheduled for work.  Verify at least two separate work references in the last year, if available, and be wary of applicants with no verifiable work experience.
6.  Recruit Early.  During the holidays, many folks will be looking for part-time work.  The longer you wait, the less chance you'll have to select from the best applicants.
5.  Don't Overhire.  You're not in need of a brain surgeon here.  And there's no need for an extensive training curriculum.  Hire to fill the current need, and not for the future.  Plus, hire the bare minimum to get by until you can verify there's enough demand to add a second or subsequent new employee.
4.  Don't Make Promises.  NEVER say you may be able to keep someone on after the holidays just to get what you perceive as a good applicant to commit to joining your firm.  If it may work out later, deal with the issue when you're ready to extend the offer.
3.  Use your community.  To find the right workers that will match your business needs, rely on the community you know: local associations and clubs, schools, religious organizations, friends and family.
2.  Trust Your Gut.  We all know what we like, and most business owners know what their customers like.  If your gut says 'not this one,' move on to the next interview.
1.  Hire Personality and Train for Skill Gaps. People pleasers help make sales, and you can't teach personality.  If you need a temporary employee to be the face of your business, get the most cheerful, helpful and positive person you can find.  It will be the best investment you can make in holiday staffing.
